Read this story in your Bible in the Book of Jonah!
God told Jonah, "Go to the big city of Nineveh and tell the people to stop being mean." But Jonah didn't want to go.
Instead of listening to God, Jonah ran away! He got on a boat going to a different city, as far away from Nineveh as he could get.
Because Jonah disobeyed, God sent a huge, scary storm. The sailors were afraid the boat would sink! They knew someone had made God unhappy.
Jonah told the sailors, "It's my fault! I'm running away from God. Throw me into the sea, and the storm will stop." So they did, and the sea became calm.
But God didn't let Jonah drown. He sent a giant fish to swallow Jonah whole! Jonah was inside the fish's belly for three days and three nights.
Inside the dark, smelly fish belly, Jonah prayed. He told God he was sorry for running away and promised he would listen from now on.
God heard Jonah's prayer. He told the fish to spit Jonah out onto the dry land... right near the city of Nineveh!
This time, Jonah listened to God. He went to Nineveh and told everyone God's message. The people listened, said they were sorry, and started being kind. God was very happy with them!
Why is it important to listen to God, even when it seems hard?
